About the Role:

We’ve just set our new strategy to 2035, and this newly created role reporting into our General Manager - Marine & Infrastructure will be key in delivering our operational objectives by gaining deeper insight and using data and technology to extract value and optimise the performance of Port Otago’s range of diverse assets. These assets include Ship-to-Shore Cranes, mobile fleet equipment (such as straddle carriers and empty container handlers), as well as marine equipment, fixed plant, ancillary equipment, and electrical infrastructure networks.

This role will manage our maintenance system to ensure comprehensive and accurate reporting on asset performance for all maintenance across our business to provide our Leadership Team with the reassurance of safe and efficient operations.

Day to day this role will be responsible for, but not limited to: 

  • Championing and leading reliability initiatives, leveraging data and technology to gain deeper insight into equipment health 
  • Providing equipment and asset management strategies that help shape decision making and feed into planning processes.
  • Working with the Fleet Maintenance Manager to implement and manage the annual maintenance plans within the maintenance system for all vessels in conjunction with all crew and Plant services. 
  • Supporting the audit and inspection of the Port Otago Maritime Operators Safety System. 
  • Working with the Maintenance Manager to develop and execute work plans for maintenance staff ensuring effective utilisation of available labour, in consultation with maintenance supervisors
  • Creating Job Plans detailing tasks, materials and labour required
  • Assisting with identification and improvement opportunities for cost and service quality 
  • Providing knowledge and information available to allow continuous improvements to equipment reliability through industry best practice data. 

About You: 

You’ll be a team player who is proactive, organised, flexible and pays high attention to detail. You’ll be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and will have: 

  • A Marine Engineer Class 3 or 4 certification (expired or current) or military equivalent
  • A qualification in Asset Management is highly desirable 
  • Experience in vessel engineering management, including time at sea and dry-dock is highly desirable 
  • Knowledge of working with modern maintenance management systems
  • Commercial acumen and good decision-making abilities
  • The ability to work effectively in matrix-reporting environments 
  • Great verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent accuracy and attention to detail
  • A positive, collaborative attitude that embraces challenges with confidence
  • A true passion for Health & Safety including excellent personal safety standards

Heads up:

  • This position will be based in Port Chalmers, Dunedin. 
  • This is typically a Monday to Friday position, but as the Port operates 24/7, occasionally some flexibility is required
  • A full clean NZ Drivers licence is essential
  • A high standard of safety - not afraid to speak up 
  • You must be able to pass Ministry of Justice, ACC checks and a medical which includes a drug and alcohol test as part of our recruitment process
  • We complete random drug and alcohol testing
