About the Role:

Port Otago has a rare opportunity for a suitably experienced Industrial Electrician to work within our Maintenance team on a permanent full-time basis, working on some of Dunedin’s biggest, tallest, and most complex equipment.

Reporting to our Electrical Supervisor, this role focuses on providing routine electrical support, including (but not limited to) scheduled maintenance, diagnosing breakdowns, and repairing faults across Port Otago's diverse assets. These include Ship-to-Shore Cranes, mobile fleet equipment (such as straddle carriers and empty container handlers), as well as marine equipment, fixed plant, ancillary equipment, and electrical infrastructure networks.

This position is critical for ensuring the sound operation of these assets, and you will be responsible for troubleshooting and problem-solving electrical faults quickly to minimise downtime. 

Work Allocation: 

Our Maintenance team provides 24-hour technical support to Container Vessel operation activities based on shipping schedules and planned maintenance activities. As part of our team, you will be provided with an indicative weekly roster each Friday which includes one guaranteed day off (GDO) to help support work/home balance. In addition to the GDO the indicative roster includes:

  • Indicative roster for Tues/Wed/Thu/Fri (actual roster confirmed by 1500 day prior).
  • Confirmed roster for Sat/Sun/Mon.
  • A guaranteed minimum of 40 hours each week (4 x 10-hour shifts or 5 x 8-hour shifts depending on your team rotation).
  • Indicative notice if overtime shifts may be required (up to 50 hours) which are typically needed during our peak season.

About You: 

Our ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the following: 

  • Electrical Trade Certificate or National Certificate in Electrical Engineering (min level 4)
  • NZ Registered with current Electricians Practicing License
  • Extensive experience as an Industrial Electrician
  • Siemens drive systems experience 
  • Experience & knowledge in using PLC diagnostic tools would be advantageous
  • Ability to work unsupervised, and under high-pressure situations i.e managing equipment breakdowns
  • Structured technical problem-solving abilities using root cause methodology
  • Knowledge of working with modern maintenance management systems
  • Experience in working at height, the safe use of elevated work platforms and fall restraint systems
  • Knowledge of computerised systems. E.g. Windows, Maximo and Microsoft Office
  • An ability to achieve results within a performance focused team
  • A positive, collaborative attitude that embraces challenges with confidence
  • A true passion for Health & Safety including excellent personal safety standards

Pay and Benefits:

  • Base salary of $108,655.20 for a 40-hour working week
  • Availability allowance of $100 per week which you are paid to be available to be allocated for an additional shift each week
  • Overtime rates

  • A full clean NZ Drivers licence is required
